I joined the department on July 7, 2014. Growing up in El Salvador, I developed a passion for helping others at a young age. After moving to New York at 10 years old and overcoming the challenges of a new language and culture, I felt a strong desire to give back to the community that gave me so many opportunities. At 19, I joined Selden FD and began my journey in EMS.

I started in the ambulance company and was later elected Lieutenant in 2021, followed by Captain in 2023. Serving as an officer allowed me to mentor members and help guide the company while continuing to care for our community.

One of my favorite parts of this department is being able to help people during their most difficult moments, while also building strong friendships that turn into family. I was also amazed by the level of training and equipment available here compared to what I had seen growing up, which made me appreciate the department even more.

One of my most unforgettable memories happened during my first week when we delivered a baby in the ambulance, and I was handed the newborn just days after being sworn in. It was a powerful moment that showed me how meaningful this work truly is.

Over time, I’ve learned to stay calm under pressure and grow as both a provider and a leader. Being part of this department has made me more compassionate and strengthened my communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.

What keeps me motivated is my passion for EMS and the connection I’ve built with the department over nearly 12 years. Serving the Selden community means giving back and being there for people when they need it most.

Outside of the fire department, I have worked in education and healthcare. I was a teacher for five years, and I now work in a home care agency recruiting caregivers. I also tutor students in Spanish and enjoy spending time with my family.

Being a member of the Selden Fire Department is part of my American Dream. It has given me the opportunity to grow, serve others, and make a meaningful impact on my community.
