Around 9:30 am on June 8th, golfers at the Island Green Driving Range in Selden noticed something odd about 40 feet above the range. An adult great horned owl had apparently flown into the netting sometime last night and become tangled in the net. The Selden Fire Department responded with a tower ladder along with a volunteer from the Star Foundation which rescues injured wildlife. The bird was taken down and is suffering from a severe leg injury. It will be taken to an animal emergency hospital for treatment. The bird named "Champ" after one of the firefighters will be eventually released back into the wild, health permitting.
