Captain Nicholas Chiofalo
On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, Captain Nicholas Chiofalo of Truck Company 1, Selden Fire Department was killed in the line of duty while working as a firefighter with the New York City Fire Department. Nicholas Chiofalo died along with five other members of his company from Brooklyn’s Engine 235 in the World Trade Center attack. “Nicky” was last seen entering the South Tower to help evacuate people trapped inside. His entire engine company, except for the driver, was lost. No remains were ever recovered.
“Nicky was a firehouse cook, a prankster, and a dedicated family man who had just ended a 24-hour shift when he called his wife to say he was needed in Manhattan, and he would call when he could and that he loved her. That was the last time his family heard from him.
In addition to working for the New York City Fire Department, Volunteer Truck Captain in Selden, New York, he was also a pyrotechnics engineer for “Fireworks by Grucci” in New York City.
