🚒 Fire Prevention Week 2026

Simple Steps. Safer Homes. Stronger Communities.

Each year, Fire Prevention Week gives us an opportunity to remind our community that preventing fires starts with the everyday choices we make at home.

The members of the Selden Fire Department encourage every family to take a few minutes this week to look around their home, talk about fire safety, and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

One area that deserves particular attention is lithium-ion battery safety. Rechargeable batteries power many of the devices we use every day, but damaged batteries, incompatible chargers, and improper charging can create a serious fire hazard.

Help protect your home and family by following a few simple precautions:
- Use only listed or approved products and charging equipment.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface and away from combustible materials.
- Never charge devices under pillows, on beds, or while sleeping.
- Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen, unusually hot, leaking, or producing an odor.
- Keep exits, hallways, and stairways clear.
- Make sure your home has working smoke alarms, and test them regularly.
- Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in your household.

Fire prevention is not limited to one week each year. Small steps and good habits can prevent emergencies and save lives.

Throughout Fire Prevention Week, take some time to talk about fire safety with your family, especially with children. Know two ways out, have a designated meeting place outside, and once you are safely outside during a fire, stay outside and call 911.

From all of us at the Selden Fire Department, thank you for helping us keep Selden safe.

🚒 Fire Prevention Today. A Safer Tomorrow.
