New CNG Fuel Truck Leak
By Selden FD
April 22, 2009
Around noon a call came in for a Garofalo Garbage Truck on Wedge Ct. leaking CNG from one of it's 5 tanks. Since these vehicles are brand new, crews were learning of the safety systems built into the vehicle. Under Ex Capt. Dave Panebianco and Chief of Dept. John Cronin the crew was able to shut down each individual tank from feeding the main manifold but still had the issue of the leaking product from the bottom tank in the stack. Compounding the incident was the steady rainfall that both annoyed fire crews but also kept the lighter than air product lower to the ground than usual. Town of Brookhaven Haz Mat response units were on scene by 1pm along with Suffolk Fire Coordinators just in case more resources were needed to be called in. None were. 4 homes were evacuated as a precaution. With the help of a little technology the manufacturer of the fuel system was contacted and a few options were communicated back to the crews who were able to isolate one tank, bleed out the remaining CNG and stabilize the situation. All crews were released by 2:30pm and the truck was turned over to the owner.
