| Yaphank, NY-- 2 of Selden Fire Department's officers were on duty as Suffolk County Police Dispatchers when the call for assistance found them at work. A 14 year old boy in for "Bring a Child to Work Day" was suddenly unconscious, not breathing and had no pulse. Not only did Captain Jonathan Eck(right) and Lt. Chris Sabella(left) jump into action but 5 other dispatchers teamed up to start CPR, contact Firecom for an ambulance and administer 2 shocks from an AED hanging in the dispatch room.
The boy was brought to an awaiting South Country Ambulance and rushed to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery for a heart ailment.
Without the heroic actions of all of these individuals, and a little bit of luck, this boy would surely not be alive today. Great Job by all who proved that teamwork was the best reaction to this emergency. |
