| On the morning of Wednesday, October 8th, the Selden Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 977 Skyline Drive, a condominium complex with multiple dwellings. At the time of the 911 call, the fire apartment was occupied by two residents and their home health aides, but all managed to escape safely. In addition, members of the Selden Fire Department were able to alert and evacuate roughly twenty occupants of the building as a precaution.
The fire began in a laundry room and spread into the surrounding rooms. The Selden Fire Department quickly arrived on scene and aggressively attacked the blaze. Mutual aid was dispatched and the fire was soon knocked down. Approximately 60 firefighters responded to the call, including units from Coram, Terryville, Centereach, Farmingville, Medford and Gordon Heights. Ronkonkoma Fire Department relocated to Selden’s headquarters to cover any additional calls for the duration of the fire.
Only a day earlier, the Selden Fire Department took delivery of brand-new SCBAs (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) and this fire provided a quick test for the new equipment. “These are state-of-the-art,” said First Assistant Chief Michael Matteo. “They are a significant improvement over our old units and allow us to operate more efficiently in burning buildings. More importantly, the new equipment will help to keep our firefighters safer.”
No injuries were reported. The four occupants of the structure were transported to Mather hospital by Selden and Coram EMS for observation only. |
