Selden Fire District operates with revenue from property taxes and billing for services for ambulance transports as approved by the NYS Governor on April 9, 2022, signed into law part of the 2022-2023 NYS Budget. Part KK of this legislation amended Section 209-b of the General Municipal Law to allow fire departments previously not permitted to bill for ambulance services to begin doing so for a four-year period, beginning July 8, 2022.
The District’s fiscal year spans from January 1st to December 31st; however, the budget development process begins as early as June with the Board of Fire Commissioners working in conjunction with the District Treasurer setting a Preliminary Budget Schedule for preparation of the up-coming budget. Every June, Budget requests are submitted to the Board of Fire Commissioners for operating revenue and expenses the following year. The District Budget includes operational expenses including payroll, benefits, building maintenance and supplies, vehicle maintenance and supplies, equipment manintenance and repair, insurance, utilities as well as Capital Projects like building and grounds improvements, vehicle and equipment replacement and othe capital projects and renovations. The district’s annual budget hearing will be held on October 21, 2025 at 7pm as set by the Board of Fire Commissioners.
Every year, the Brookhaven Town Assessor calculates the amount of property tax revenue the District receives based on the submission of the District’s budget and revenue resolutions. The District can ask for an additional 2% in revenue, we are proud to announce that the Selden Fire District has only proposed an increase of 1% for the 2026 operation al budget coming from 2025 coming in below the cap of 2% The Brookhaven Town Assessor collects the taxpayer dollars every month and disseminate it back to the taxing districts within the town. It takes a period of six months to collect the revenue budgeted for.
Each month, at the regular meeting, the Board of Fire Commissioners review, and approve, all expenditures for goods, services, and payroll. They monitor account balances closely and approve any expenditures that were not budgeted for when emergencies arise.
The public is encouraged to attend any Commissioner regular meeting or any of the Budget Workshops or Public Hearings which are part of the normal budget process. We value the input of our constituents and want them to see that we are being fiscally responsible with their tax dollars. The Selden Fire District works each year with outside, independent auditors who review the District’s financial practices and statements in accordance with Government Auditing Standards. Such fire district audit shall include, but not be limited to, the district’s financial conditions and resources and such other things as the state comptroller may designate. A copy of the audit report in form prescribed by the state comptroller and certified by the accountant, shall be furnished to the commissioners, and the state comptroller within one hundred eighty days following the end of the fiscal year audited.
